Selfie with Success!

Selfie with Success!
I visited  KGBV (Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalay)
On 19th November 2019. As soon as I entered the 7th standard class, I greeted them and asked a simple question naturally, "What time is it now?"
It was a class of girls. They were sitting neatly and were dressed up smartly.
When I asked the question in English, they didn't understand. I elaborated in Marathi, but they were not able to say it in English. However, they tried to give answers which were improper.
So I thought to teach them to ask in English.

Aim: Encourage students to say time and asking for time.

Learning outcome:

By the end of this activity,
  • students will be better able to ask time and say time in English
Useful language:
  1. What time is it now?

- It's 20 minutes past 12.

Demonstration:
I gave a short demo. I invited one stronger student and asked her, "What time is it now?"
She tried to say, "It's 20 minutes past 12."
As she was struggling with the sentence, I helped her by saying it properly. We repeated the dialogue twice.

The Whole class says, "It's 20 minutes past 12."

After that, I asked the whole classroom ,"What time is it now?"
The whole class said, "It's 20 minutes past 12."
I did this to build their confidence. I congratulated everyone for being able to say time and ask time.

Open Pairs Activity:

After the whole classroom activity I called two students in front of the class and assigned roles of a teacher and student.
They were given instructions and they did confidently.

S1: What time is it now?
S2: It's 20 minutes past 12.

When they're conducting the activity, other students observed. Finally, We all appreciated them.

Closed pair activity:
Students learn better when they work in pairs and in small groups. They learn from each other effectively without the support of teachers.
By this time students learnt what to say. I motivated each and every child to ask the question and answer. Therefore I am made pairs in the class in which one student asked the same question to others and it was answered by the other. The same was repeated by each pair. In this way every student of 7th standard was able to say the question," what time is it now?" And to answer it correctly. I engaged every student by closed pair activity where everyone practiced asking question and answering it.
 Consolidation:
I wrote the same question and answer on the blackboard  in order to help learners to read and understand. This also helped learners if they missed some words.
 Chain drill activity:

I invited 6 students in front of the class. They stood in a semi circle. I gave clear instructions about chain drill activity. One student asked a question to the student who stood next to her, then the student who gave answer, asked the same question to the next student. In this way everyone got the opportunity to ask and answer.
All the students were engaged, supported motivated, encouraged and activated to speak.

Closing:
I wrote a few sentences about "We" and students read out loudly in chorus.
  • We are girls.
  • We are good girls.
  • We are very good girls.
  • We are students.
  • We are in 7 standard.
Selfie with success:

When my aim was fulfilled by the end of the activity, I took a selfie with success!

Selfie with success is a great encouragement initiated  by Dr Vaishali Veer ma'am (Education Officer, Primary, ZP, Nashik).
Thanks for this motivation!
