Online Tag meetings in Nashik

 Dear tag Cs

I'd like to share my experience of online teaching with you. I work at DIET, Nashik as a SARP. I support tag coordinators to run teacher activity groups smoothly in my Nashik district. We have 15 blocks and 247 clusters.  There are 2 Urban resource centers (URC): one is Nashik NMC which has 24 clusters and the other is Malegaon URC that has 17 clusters. Nearly Nashik has 288 clusters. We have 235 Tag coordinators or facilitators. I've formed a WhatsApp group of  tag coordinators in which 200+ Tag Cs (Some are trained by British council, some are by RAA Aurangabad and  most of them trained by DIET) have been included along with many district level authorities.

In August 20,  I requested them  on WhatsApp as well as in online shikshanparishad  to start online tag meetings. Before, not a single online tag meeting was held throughout the district. Most of the tag Cs were not familiar with online tag. They had some issues I.g. how to conduct meeting, what online platform to be used, how to engage tag teachers, what sections to be included, how to manage online meeting, etc.

So they requested me to conduct a demo tag meeting. Initially I was not so comfortable with conducting demo meeting. But I decided and brainstormed over it. I got a huge support from Kamini Taneja ma'am. She helped me providing online tag meetings guidelines.

Tag Cs can divide  a tag meeting into two parts. Part A and Part B.

Part A consists of 

  • A warmer
  • Language development
  • Reflection

And this can be conducted on the first Wednesday for 1.5hrs mainly at 11.00 a.m to 12.30p.m

Part B comprises

  • Review of last meeting
  • Learning by reading
  • Learning by watching
  • Reflection

And this can be conducted on the second Wednesday for 1.5hrs mainly at 11.00 a.m to 12.30p.m.

According to the above guidelines, I prepared two ppts: part A and part B. ( I have been preparing ppts each month to support some novice TAG facilitators) I conducted demo online tag meeting with Tag Cs using zoom platform. 

Firstly,  I provided basic guidelines or norms of  using the zoom, how to mute, unmute, switch on/off video, share screen, setting profile and use of chat box, etc. Immediately after I conducted a short quiz based on the zoom guidelines in which participants needed to share their answers in the chat box. Amazingly I got a huge response in chat box. As soon as they started writing correct answers, I appreciated by their profile names, and it worked a lot. In the first demo meeting 90 TAG Cs took participation and I was successful to get their active responses in chat box. Using chat box is a very successful strategy for the involvement of every kind of learners. I noticed and observed this during the demo tag and other meetings that I attended.

I also used few other strategies to engage tag Cs in a demo tag.

 For example: 

  1. Select activity from Language development section, Unmute two participants, give clear instructions, assign them roles and conduct role play activity.
  2. Nominate some passive participants and ask them questions
  3. Share a screen with scrambled words and ask to unscramble and write in chat box
  4. Read out correct words, etc.
  5.  Ask questions on agreement how many tag Cs feel comfortable conducting zoom, if you agree to conduct meeting, raise your hands in front of video, I'll take screenshots. This was also interesting.
 My demo meeting was very successful.
  •  As a result 230 online tag meetings occurred in Sep20 and 236 in Oct20. 
  • 92% Tag Cs used zoom and 8% Google meet
  • It boosted confidence of Tag Cs to conduct online tag meeting
  • It also motivated other SARPs and ESAs to provide support to Tag Cs for conducting tag meetings.

I appreciate your efforts to continue Tejas project during unprecedented pandemic.it was exciting to read how you brainstormed with expert Taneja maam to mould TAG Meeting into 'Online TAG Meeting model'. In this new normal situation, online platform is proved to be boon, this fact with your efforts has been realised by all TAG Cs.
